14th European Meeting of the Urban Economics Association – Hosted in Berlin by Humboldt University and ESMT

The 14th European Meeting of the Urban Economics Association will take place on March 28–29, 2025, in Berlin, bringing together leading researchers and scholars in urban and regional economics. The conference is locally organized by Gabriel Ahlfeldt (Humboldt University) and Jan S. Nimczik (ESMT), both members of the Berlin School of Economics. It offers a platform for high-quality academic discussions on urban development, housing markets, transportation, economic geography, and spatial policy.

The program includes two keynote lectures by Esteban Rossi-Hansberg (University of Chicago) and Nina Pavcnik (Dartmouth College). In addition, selected research papers, chosen through a competitive review process, will be presented in parallel sessions featuring 20-minute talks followed by moderated discussions.

A Student Prize Session on Friday morning will highlight outstanding PhD research. All sessions, including registration, keynotes, presentations, and coffee and lunch breaks, will take place at Humboldt University’s School of Business and Economics (Spandauer Straße 1, 10178 Berlin), centrally located in the city.

On Friday evening, participants are invited to a reception and dinner at ESMT Berlin (Schlossplatz 1, 10178 Berlin), just a short walk from Humboldt University. ESMT, a key partner within the Berlin School of Economics, is housed in the historic former headquarters of the German Democratic Republic. The venue is adjacent to the Humboldt Forum, allowing for a scenic 10-minute walk between locations.

The call for papers attracted cutting-edge research in urban and spatial economics, with a strong focus on urban policy, regional development, and local public goods provision. Conference registration is now open, with general attendee registration closing on March 20, 2025. Reduced rates are available for students.

The Urban Economics Association fosters excellence in urban and regional economics research, providing a critical platform for scholars across fields. As Gabriel Ahlfeldt emphasizes, "The UEA Meeting is a must for anyone working on urban and spatial economics. It offers a unique mix of high-quality research and vibrant discussions that drive new insights into how cities and spatial systems function and evolve."

Likewise, Jan S. Nimczik highlights the event’s multi-field relevance: "In a world where goods, capital, and labor are increasingly mobile across locations, the European Meeting of the Urban Economics Association offers valuable insights far beyond urban economics. Researchers in labor, trade, public, environmental economics, and macroeconomics will find a wealth of ideas on how spatial forces shape economic outcomes."

This conference is made possible through the support and collaboration of several key institutions. In addition to the Berlin School of Economics, Humboldt University, and ESMT, the event is supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG), the European Research Council (ERC), and the Center for Metropolitan Studies. Their contributions help foster an environment for rigorous academic exchange and innovation in urban economics.
