Berlin School of Economics RAP - Call for Applications 2024

The following seven institutions cooperate in the Research Associate Program of the Berlin School of Economics to promote the careers of junior researchers: the School of Business and Economics at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, the School of Business and Economics at Freie Universität Berlin, the School of Economics and Management at Technische Universität Berlin, the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Potsdam, the WZB Berlin Social Science Center, the European School of Management and Technology Berlin and the Hertie School.

The Berlin School of Economics invites applications for several Research Associate positions for fixed-term appointments for a maximum of 6 years, according to German WissZeitVG - E 13 TV-L HU/TU/FU/UP or E 14 TVöD.

Excellent researchers from the following fields are invited to apply: applied microeconomics, labor economics, health economics, economics of education, macroeconomics. Each of the positions will be hosted and administered by one of the seven Berlin School of Economics institutions.

Duties: Successful candidates will contribute part of their time to research and teaching in economics at the Bachelor, Master or PhD levels, as well as to furthering their own research agenda.

Requirements: Applicants should hold a PhD in economics or a neighboring discipline at the position starting date, and should have excellent qualifications as well as outstanding own research.

Working field:

Research on topics of macroeconomics and/or financial crises, for example: transmission channels of monetary policy, rationing equilibria and price adjustment processes, climate-neutral growth, consequences of strategic uncertainty, causes and prevention of asset price bubbles. Methods of analyses: theory, simulation models, and/or laboratory experiments. Opportunity to do a habilitation or aquire an equivalent status of qualification for a full professorship. Teaching in macroeconomics and monetary economics, international economics, or financial crises with a teaching duty in accordance with the regulations in LVVO.

Necessary qualifications:

  • successfully completed PhD in economics.
  • a sound knowledge in micro- and macroeconomic methods, statistics, and game theory
  • good command of German and English language; sufficient language proficiency to teach classes in both German and English is expected
  • ability to work in a team

  

Desired qualifications:

  • experience in experimental economics and knowledge of STATA, Matlab, or another software for data analysis are an advantage

The WZB offers a position for a postdoctoral research associate in the summer/fall of 2024. Strong researchers with a background in quantitative macroeconomics (especially heterogeneous agent models) and/or applied labor economics and a research focus on issues related to inequality, intergenerational mobility, gender, and growth are encouraged to apply.

The WZB is a publicly funded research institution within the German Leibniz association.

The academic research conducted at the WZB in the social sciences is theory-based and problem-oriented. The position at the WZB implies freedom from teaching obligations, strong administrative support for your projects, your own grant proposals and workshop organization, as well as many opportunities to interact with academic peers.

The European-University Viadrina offers a position for a postdoctoral research associate in the fall of 2024. Strong researchers with a background in applied labor or urban economics and a research focus on issues related to inequality, gender, education and/or labor markets are encouraged to apply.

The Viadrina is a small international social-science university located in Frankfurt (Oder), which is in commuting distance to central Berlin. The position comprises the standard teaching load of 4 semester hours per week, with the possibility of generating own buy-outs. Due to our international student body at the Viadrina all teaching (at all levels) is preferably conducted in English.

The position at the Viadrina is generated through core university funding (rather than project grants), which implies an absolute freedom for your research. Moreover, we offer strong administrative support for your projects, your own grant proposals and workshop organization, as well as many opportunities to interact with academic peers, travel money, etc.

The School of Business and Economics at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin is looking to fill two

Junior Professorships in “Macroeconomics” (Macroeconomics I and Macroeconomics II)

starting 1 October 2024.

These are tenure track positions, with an initial level W1 and with the possibility of a promotion to level W3. In order to verify whether the individual performance meets the requirements of permanent employment, an evaluation process will be opened not later than after five years of service. Tenure track professors at the HU Berlin are expected to carry out research and teaching duties, as well as be active on various university committees, in the promotion of young scientists and acquire leadership and management skills. The actual requirements as outlined in the framework catalogue [https://hu.berlin/tenuretrack\_katalog] will be specified in the course of the appointment process.

The School of Business and Economics seeks individuals with an outstanding track record in macroeconomics as evidenced in refereed publications in leading journals with the vision, leadership and enthusiasm to build upon an internationally recognized research program. Successful candidates have, or will have completed their doctoral degree in economics upon beginning employment. Ideally, one appointment will have a research focus on macroeconomic theory, the other in empirical macroeconomics. Collaboration with other research groups at the department is welcome, notably TRR 190 “Rationality and Competition” and TRR 266 "Accounting for Transparency”, as well as a commitment to promoting a positive, diverse and inclusive institutional culture. Experience in bridging economic research and policy action and work at the science/policy interface are beneficial.

The faculty’s staff in economics is moving towards a departmental structure in which the new professorships will participate to the same extent as all other professorships in the common pool of staff and research infrastructures.
